Hi Mark,

Great to hear from you and to get your questions. In fact, the type of questions you are asking show that you’ve put a bit of thought into the subject and haven’t just driven up to your nearest flying club with a full (but soon to be empty) wallet.

You see, it can be very easy to jump straight in to a trial flight, then a series of lessons and then run out of money. After all, learning to fly in the average light aeroplane isn’t cheap – at least not in the UK. You can end up with that aforementioned empty wallet and (hopefully) a bunch of happy memories, but nothing else to show for it.

So the very first question you need to ask yourself is “Why do I want to learn to fly?”.

Unfortunately, I’ve just glanced at the clock and realised I need to be somewhere else, so I’ve got to pause here. But, there’s a lot more I want to say on this subject so please come back in a day or so when I hope to have a more comprehensive reply for you.

Hi Kelvin,

Have enjoyed reading the posts that you have put out and was wondering if you could help me out.

I am going to be taking early retirement in the near future and have often wondered about learning to fly but as I don’t know either; anyone that can fly or anything about flying I was wondering if you could help with some information?

What do I need to know first?
Is there more than one type of private licence?
Where is the best place for me to go get started?
Is there any recommended reading?

I suppose basically I am asking for some guidance to get me started out on the right path and avoiding any pitfalls that any novice might encounter.
